Alnwick Castle is one of the homes the Duke of Northumberland, and site of famous ‘The Alnwick Gardens’; it dominates the west of the town, above the River Aln, and is in its own right a tourist attraction. The castle is open from April to September, and the Gardens all year around. It is the second largest inhabited castle in England, after Windsor. The centre of Alnwick town is the marketplace, with its market cross & numerous shops & quaint alleyways.
Amble (7 miles N) is Northumberland's most important fishing centre north of the Tyne, and boasts a modern leisure Boating Marina. There are fine walks along the River Coquet to Warkworth, and Coastal walks that stretch for miles.
Lying a mile offshore is Coquet Island and its 80 ft lighthouse, which is built on the ruins of a medieval tower. It is a RAPB reserve for puffins, terns, eider ducks, and some of Britain's rarest seabirds.

Warkworth Castle a few miles beyond Amble, and is one of the most splendid ruins of its type in Northumberland, unspoilt by later day restorations. Originally built in 1139 it was much extended in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and much of its structure remains today.
A short walk from the castle and across the river is the Warkworth Hermitage. Carved out of rock, this tiny 14th Century chapel contains the remains of the hermit’s house, chapel, confessional and dormitory.
